Gaurav Gogoi Accuses BJP of Silencing Dissent in Assam
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi/Guwahati, March 9 (NationPress) Gaurav Gogoi, the Assam Congress president and Lok Sabha MP, has accused the BJP-led government in Assam of suppressing political dissent, following the police's seizure of Congress "chargesheet" copies aimed at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Four Congress party workers were arrested in Guwahati as a result.
Speaking to the media in the national capital, Gogoi claimed that the police’s actions demonstrate the government’s anxiety over criticism and its efforts to obstruct the Opposition from airing grievances about the ruling party to the public.
"The Chief Minister presents himself as a robust and fearless leader, yet his administration has seized a few pamphlets issued by the Assam Congress," Gogoi remarked.
"If the government is so assured, why does it feel threatened by a handful of papers that showcase the administration's shortcomings?" he questioned.
According to Congress officials, the documents included serious allegations of corruption involving Sarma and his wife, which were being delivered for public distribution when police stopped the vehicle late Sunday night in Guwahati.
The four detained Congress workers—Pranjit Pator, Akshay Kumar Bordoloi, Zainal Abedin, and Rakibul Haque—were subsequently arrested by the police. Notably, two of them are affiliated with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). In response to the incident, senior Congress leaders visited the Dispur Police Station on Monday.
Meera Borthakur, president of the Assam Mahila Congress, along with Bedabrat Bora, chairman of the APCC media department, sought clarification from law enforcement regarding the confiscation of the materials.
Borthakur noted that the chargesheet was officially launched during a press conference coinciding with Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s recent visit to Assam. The printed materials were intended for distribution when police allegedly halted the vehicle carrying them.
Challenging the police action, she stated that any objections related to election materials should originate from the Election Commission of India.
"If there is an issue, it should be raised by the Election Commission. Has the Election Commission initiated any suo motu action? Certainly not," she asserted.
Borthakur further indicated that the chargesheet includes claims concerning purported transfers of tribal land to the Adani Group and allegations regarding the accumulation of wealth by the Chief Minister’s spouse.
She emphasized that the government ought to address the allegations instead of confiscating the documents.
Meanwhile, the arrested workers were presented before a court today. The APCC announced that it has filed petitions for bail, with advocate Amon Wadud representing the workers in court.
Congress leaders have also indicated that they might pursue legal avenues regarding the confiscation of the documents and the arrests.
