Manjalpur bypoll: BJP's Satish Patel files nomination in Vadodara on July 13
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Satish Patel filed his nomination papers for the Manjalpur Assembly by-election at the Vadodara Collector's Office on Monday, 13 July, as senior party leaders rallied behind him with a show of strength that underscored the seat's emotional and political significance.
A Nomination With Pageantry and Purpose
The filing was preceded by the inauguration of the BJP's election central office in Manjalpur, a public meeting, and a 'Vijay Vishwas Bike Rally' led by state BJP president Jagdish Vishwakarma. Senior leaders, office-bearers, workers, and supporters accompanied Patel in the procession to the collector's office.
Before the public meeting, party leaders paid floral tributes to the late Yogesh Patel, the eight-time MLA whose death on 2 June left the Manjalpur seat vacant after 36 years of unbroken representation across eight consecutive Assembly elections.
What Party Leaders Said
Addressing the gathering, Vishwakarma expressed confidence in retaining the constituency. “The resounding victory of BJP candidate Satish Patel in the by-election will be a true tribute to late Yogesh Patel,” he said, adding that a decisive mandate would further strengthen development initiatives being implemented in Gujarat under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
Vishwakarma described the BJP as a ‘Party with a Difference’, saying it was the only political organisation where an ordinary worker could rise through dedication and service. He urged party workers to visit every household and maximise voter turnout ahead of polling day.
In his own address, Satish Patel appealed to voters to elect him, pledging to fulfil the unfinished aspirations of the late Yogesh Patel while continuing the development of Manjalpur.
Who Is Satish Patel
Patel is a veteran BJP organisation leader with deep roots in Vadodara city politics. He is a former president of the Vadodara district BJP and has served as general secretary of the district unit. His administrative experience spans roles as chairman of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation's Standing Committee, chairman of Chhani Nagarik Sahakari Bank, and director of both Baroda Central Cooperative Bank and Vadodara Sugar Cooperative. He has been elected as a municipal councillor multiple times.
Party leaders cited his clean image, administrative track record, and organisational capabilities as the primary reasons behind his selection as the BJP's candidate.
The Contest and Key Dates
The Manjalpur by-election has shaped up as one of Gujarat's more closely watched political contests. The BJP has fielded Satish Patel, while the Indian National Congress (Congress) has nominated former state minister and Gujarat Congress vice-president Bhikha Rabari.
As per the official schedule, nominations closed on 13 July, scrutiny is set for 14 July, and the last date for withdrawal is 16 July. Polling is scheduled for 30 July, with counting of votes on 3 August. The outcome will be watched as a gauge of the BJP's organisational strength in urban Gujarat in the post-Yogesh Patel era.
