New Delhi, July 8 (NationPress) A political uproar erupted on Tuesday following allegations that Congress party President Mallikarjun Kharge showed disrespect towards President Droupadi Murmu and her predecessor Ram Nath Kovind by referring to them as Murma ji and Covid, respectively. In response, the Congress accused the BJP of expropriating tribal lands, forests, and resources.
The BJP labeled the Congress as anti-women, anti-Dalit, and anti-tribal, while senior Congress figure Pawan Khera dismissed these accusations regarding Kharge's comments on President Murmu and ex-President Kovind.
Khera characterized the BJP's condemnation as hypocritical and selective, stating during an interview with IANS, “this reflects the narrow mindset of the BJP.”
He drew attention to the lynching incidents involving Akhlaq and Pehlu Khan, asserting, “This is the same mindset that shows Colonel Sophia on the one side and on the other side commits atrocities against minorities.”
Khera criticized the BJP for its tokenistic approach towards Dalits, Adivasis, and minorities.
“While they portray President Murmu and former President Kovind as champions of tribal empowerment, the reality in tribal regions of Chhattisgarh is deeply troubling. Millions of trees have been felled, and they are stripping tribals of their lands, forests, and resources. This is the true mindset of the BJP,” he stated.
Khera emphasized that the BJP’s history regarding tribal rights is hollow and exploitative, masking real issues behind symbolic gestures while undermining communities.
The Congress leader also criticized the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) following the Sangh's claim of mediation between the Kuki and Meitei communities in the violence-stricken Manipur.
“Who is the RSS to facilitate peace talks? Have the Home Minister or Prime Minister stepped down? Why has the government outsourced the Manipur crisis to the Sangh Parivar?” Khera questioned.
He added that the RSS is attempting to impose its ideological agenda in tribal areas across India. “Adivasi regions have resisted the Sangh's ideology for years. If the RSS withdraws from these areas, a significant portion of tribal India's issues will vanish.”
Khera's incisive remarks have intensified an already charged political atmosphere, with both Congress and BJP exchanging sharp criticisms ahead of crucial state elections.
While BJP leaders argue that Kharge’s comments reveal the Congress’ anti-Dalit and anti-tribal attitudes, the Congress maintains that the ruling party is engaged in cosmetic inclusivity and further marginalization of vulnerable groups.
