Has the body of the missing Indian deportee from Kuwait been found in Kalamassery?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kochi, Feb 6 (NationPress) The Kerala High Court was notified on Friday that a body discovered in Kalamassery has been identified as that of Suraj Lama, an Indian national who vanished after his deportation from Kuwait and arrival at Kochi airport.
The identification was validated following a DNA analysis, which confirmed that the body, found in the proposed Judicial City region of Kalamassery by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), belonged to Lama.
The Division Bench, consisting of Justice Devan Ramachandran and Justice M.B. Snehalatha, while reviewing a habeas corpus petition submitted by Lama’s son, instructed the Station House Officer of Nedumbassery to present the complete case file concerning the missing person case along with the post-mortem report on Monday.
This habeas corpus petition was filed by Lama’s son with the support of the Kerala Legal Services Authority (KeLSA). Suraj Lama had been deported from Kuwait and sent to Kochi in accordance with official orders.
Despite being in a visibly fragile state, potentially facing cognitive and other impairments, he was cleared by immigration and airport officials and allowed to leave the airport unassisted.
A missing person report was lodged on October 8, 2025.
Although Lama was reportedly spotted by the public in the subsequent days, he remained untraceable.
Authorities later found him wandering and sent him to Kalamassery Medical College Hospital, but he was discharged after doctors identified no visible medical issues.
The High Court had previously established an SIT and highlighted serious procedural failures in the management of the deportation and missing person case, remarking that proper adherence to protocols could have prevented the loss of Lama’s life.
Ordering the Superintendent of Ernakulam Medical College, Kalamassery, to hand over the body to the family, the court expressed its sorrow over the incident and extended apologies on behalf of the system.
In a statement to the media, Lama’s son, who has been advocating for justice alongside his mother, expressed profound distress over the occurrence in Kerala.
“It’s all over now,” he stated, visibly heartbroken over the loss of his father’s life.
