New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) Former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has been appointed as the new head coach of New South Wales (NSW). The 48-year-old succeeds Greg Shipperd, whose tenure was cut short despite having a year left on his contract.

Haddin, whose illustrious career as a wicketkeeper-batter for Australia, NSW, and the Sydney Sixers earned him Cricket NSW Life Member status in 2024, will take on the role in June. His appointment marks a significant return to the state setup over a decade since his last game for the Blues in November 2014.

With a wealth of international coaching experience, including roles as an assistant and fielding coach for Australia under Darren Lehmann and Justin Langer, Haddin will manage all elements of the Blues program. He aims to build on the solid foundations already established, promoting a unique playing style, nurturing First-Class and Australian talent, and striving for more titles.

“NSW cricket has played a crucial role in my life, and rejoining the fold as the Blues head coach is a proud moment for me and my family. I am eager to collaborate with our talented players to restore the prestige of NSW cricket and create a team with a strong and distinctive style that we can all take pride in. Wearing the baggy blue was a special honor and provided me with some of my career's greatest memories,” Haddin stated in an NSW announcement.

Haddin's role as NSW Head Coach will allow him to don a Blues uniform for the first time in nearly 12 years, having last played for the state in November 2014 during his final season of First-Class and List-A cricket.

Lee Germon, CEO of Cricket NSW, remarked, “I am thrilled to welcome Brad Haddin back to Cricket NSW to advance our Blues program and pursue additional titles. Brad is a well-respected coach with experience at both international and franchise levels, coupled with a profound understanding of the NSW style of play.”

Currently, Haddin is part of Ricky Ponting's coaching team at Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has previously worked with Sunrisers Hyderabad, while also being active in media as a commentator.

While Haddin will lead the Blues, his responsibilities will not extend to the Big Bash League teams Sydney Sixers or Sydney Thunder. Both franchises are in the process of hiring new head coaches following their split from Greg Shipperd and Trevor Bayliss, with James Hopes and Shane Watson among those rumored to be considered for the roles.

Point of View

Brad Haddin's appointment is a significant development for Australian cricket. His extensive experience both as a player and coach positions him to effectively lead the team towards future successes. This transition provides an opportunity for the Blues to build on their legacy and adapt to modern challenges in the sport.
