Why is Jasprit Bumrah Missing the T20 WC Opener?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 7 (NationPress) Senior fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was not available for selection in India's first match of the 2026 T20 World Cup against the USA due to health issues, as confirmed by the BCCI in a statement on Saturday.
"Jasprit Bumrah was not available for selection in India’s opening match of the T20 World Cup against the USA due to health concerns. The BCCI medical team is diligently monitoring his status."
Consequently, Mohammed Siraj was included in the playing XI, having recently been brought into the 15-player squad after Harshit Rana was sidelined due to a knee injury incurred during the warm-up match against South Africa on February 4 in Navi Mumbai.
“After consultations with a specialist and further scans, the BCCI medical team has declared him unfit for participation in the tournament. The team management hopes for his swift recovery. Mohd. Siraj will replace Harshit in the squad,” the BCCI stated in its press release.
India also missed out on Sanju Samson and opted for the in-form Ishan Kishan as the primary wicketkeeper-batter for the tournament opener. Earlier, the USA won the toss and chose to bowl against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.
Ishan Kishan is set to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma. He scored 53 runs in the warm-up match against South Africa as an opener and notched 103 runs as one drop against New Zealand in their last T20 match in Trivandrum.
