Bushra Bibi, Wife of Ex-PM Imran Khan, Requests Sentence Suspension on Health Grounds
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, April 19 (NationPress) Bushra Bibi, spouse of Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is pursuing the suspension of her sentence related to the Al-Qadir Trust case on the basis of medical reasons, as reported by local media.
She has filed a request with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) concerning this matter, as highlighted by the prominent Pakistani outlet, The Express Tribune, on Sunday.
Bushra recently underwent eye surgery at a private hospital in Rawalpindi. According to prison officials, she was moved to a specialized facility for this procedure, which was executed by retina expert Dr. Nadeem Qureshi at Al Shifa Eye Hospital.
After one night in the hospital, she was released and returned to Adiala Jail. Jail authorities noted that follow-up check-ups will be performed as per medical recommendations.
The application also urged the IHC to summon the head of the Ophthalmology Department at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, along with the jail superintendent and deputy superintendent, to provide pertinent documents about Bushra Bibi’s surgery, including her complete medical record, operation notes, and treatment history.
The request states, "The Applicant should be immediately transferred to Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi, for adequate postoperative care under continuous medical supervision, and ensure that the relevant jail authorities facilitate regular and unobstructed access for the Applicant's legal counsel and family members in line with the law and prior court directives."
Bushra Bibi's legal representative, Salman Safdar, has submitted an application to clarify her health condition amid ongoing hearings regarding the plea for suspension of her and Imran Khan's sentences, which is set to continue on April 22, presided over by Chief Justice Sardar Sarfraz Dogar.
Reportedly, Bushra Bibi is facing a seven-year sentence.
The application further emphasized that Bushra has been "subjected to prolonged detention, repeated delays in the consideration of her suspension plea, consistent denial of access to legal counsel, and now serious deterioration of health necessitating surgery under undisclosed conditions."
It also pointed out that her appeal has been pending for over a year, and her ongoing imprisonment serves "no beneficial purpose" and will result in "irreparable harm."
The application mentioned that family members were "suddenly and informally informed by jail officials that the applicant had undergone eye surgery due to complications."
It raised serious concerns and alarm that neither her legal counsel nor any family member was consulted or informed prior to the surgery, nor was there any prior disclosure of a significant decline in her medical condition that warranted such intervention.
Furthermore, it claimed that the entire surgical process "appears to have been conducted without transparency, disregarding basic standards, and without providing the Applicant the opportunity to consult with her counsel or family."
