PTI Seeks Supreme Court Approval for Imran Khan's Medical Care at Preferred Facility
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has approached the Supreme Court of Pakistan with a petition advocating for the medical care of former Prime Minister Imran Khan at a hospital of his preference and seeking permission for his personal doctors to be involved in his treatment, as reported by local media.
PTI attorney Sardar Latif Khosa submitted the request after Imran Khan was hospitalized for follow-up care regarding his eye condition on Tuesday, according to Dawn, a prominent Pakistani daily. The application represents Imran Khan and names the Islamabad district election commissioner as the respondent, referencing the Toshakhana case where PTI's founder was initially detained in 2022.
In the application, Imran Khan has urged that he be transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for specialized eye care from a retina expert. Additionally, he has requested to consult with his personal doctors, Faisal Sultan and Dr. Aasim Yusuf, allowing them to participate in all examination and treatment processes.
The petition also emphasizes that the family of the petitioner should be properly informed and granted reasonable access during his medical evaluations and treatment. It seeks the release of verified medical records and examination reports concerning Imran Khan to his legal representatives, as per Dawn.
Furthermore, the plea calls for the lawyer to have adequate access to Imran Khan for timely instructions necessary for effective representation in court, asserting that Imran Khan, at 73 years old, is in a condition that raises significant health concerns not just for his family but for the broader population of Pakistan.
Khosa highlighted that conducting medical evaluations in secrecy, without disclosing details to Imran Khan's family or independent physicians, has raised serious worries. He remarked, "The outcomes of the medical assessments conducted at PIMS hospital remain unknown, and such obscurity is bewildering and unacceptable under any circumstances."
Reports concerning Imran Khan's eye issue, specifically the right Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO), emerged in January, with the government's disclosure of his first medical procedure occurring five days after it was performed on January 24.
Since that time, the opposition has accused the government of lacking transparency regarding Imran Khan's treatment and of not allowing him to see his personal physicians; these allegations have been denied by the government.
Imran Khan was taken to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for follow-up care in the early hours of Tuesday.
