Key Takeaways
Islamabad, Feb 26 (NationPress) A group of imprisoned leaders from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have addressed a letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, raising grave concerns about the reported obstacles in granting legal and medical access to PTI's founder and former Prime Minister, Imran Khan. The leaders implored Chief Justice Yahya Afridi to take action to uphold justice in this situation. They requested that Afridi ensure that Imran Khan is permitted to meet with his personal physician, legal representatives, and family members as per legal provisions, according to local media sources from Thursday.
In a letter conveyed through their legal representatives, PTI leaders Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Yasmin Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, and Mahmood-ur-Rashid asserted that Imran Khan has been denied access to his personal doctor, family, and legal counsel during his medical treatment, as reported by the prominent media outlet Geo News on Thursday.
The letter was prompted after Imran Khan received a second dose of treatment on Tuesday at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad.
The PTI leaders drew parallels between Imran Khan's medical situation and that of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 2019, highlighting that the government facilitated Nawaz Sharif's transfer to Services Hospital in Lahore for appropriate medical care when he experienced low platelet counts. They emphasized that Nawaz Sharif's personal doctor participated in all medical board meetings and his family and legal counsel were granted access to him.
Furthermore, they noted that Nawaz Sharif was permitted to travel to England for heart treatment where he had previously received care. The PTI leaders accused the current government of engaging in “cloak-and-dagger” tactics, initially restricting Imran Khan from accessing medical facilities when he fell ill, only to issue statements after reports surfaced concerning his CRVO diagnosis.
In their correspondence, the PTI leaders claimed that Imran Khan's treatment rights were overlooked, preventing his family, legal advisor, and consultants from meeting with him. They mentioned that Imran Khan's family was informed about his second treatment procedure conducted at 2 am on Tuesday. The leaders alleged that the government is deliberately obstructing access to maintain political dominance, urging Chief Justice Yahya Afridi to guarantee that Imran Khan can meet with his personal doctor, legal counsel, and family members as legally mandated, as reported by Geo News.
On Wednesday, PTI submitted a petition to Pakistan's Supreme Court seeking the right for Imran Khan to receive medical treatment at a hospital of his choosing and to consult with his personal doctors, according to local news sources.
PTI attorney Sardar Latif Khosa filed the application on behalf of Imran Khan, naming the Islamabad district election commissioner as the respondent, according to Dawn. In the petition, Imran Khan has requested immediate transfer to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for specialized eye treatment from a retina expert.
