Why Are Protests by Pakistan's Opposition Alliance Continuing?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, Feb 17 (NationPress) The ongoing demonstration, spearheaded by prominent figures from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) alongside members of the opposition coalition, the Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Ayin-e-Pakistan (TTAP), has now reached its fifth day, according to local news sources.
Key leaders from PTI affirmed on Tuesday that their sit-in, triggered by concerns regarding the health of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, will persist, as reported by Geo News.
While addressing the media outside the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi remarked that the demands of PTI had been misinterpreted. He insisted that Imran Khan should be allowed to consult his personal doctor and meet with family members, dismissing claims that PTI was asking for a medical report.
In his statements, Afridi clarified, "Our requests do not include any report." He emphasized, "We are seeking permission for him to see his personal doctor, a family member, an eye specialist, and to receive treatment at Shifa International Hospital."
Afridi pointed out that none of the demands presented by the opposition have been acknowledged by the authorities.
"If the government is preventing his personal doctor from visiting, what is it trying to conceal?" he questioned, asserting that PTI's requests are neither unconstitutional nor unlawful. He underscored that it is Imran Khan's legal and constitutional right to receive treatment from a physician of his choosing, as reported by Geo News.
The opposition coalition has maintained that their protest centers around legal and constitutional rights, emphasizing that Imran Khan must be allowed to consult the doctor of his preference and interact with PTI representatives.
Recently, Imran Khan submitted a medical report to the Supreme Court, claiming he has only 15% vision left in his right eye. A seven-page document presented by PTI attorney Salman Safdar to the Supreme Court regarding his time at Adiala Jail noted, "According to the Petitioner (Imran), he was found to have a blood clot that inflicted serious damage, and despite the treatments provided [including an injection], he is left with merely 15% vision in his right eye."
The court appointed Safdar as an amicus curiae (friend of the court), instructing him to confer with PTI founder Imran Khan and submit a report by February 11. The report indicated that Imran Khan had normal 6x6 vision in both eyes until October 2025. Subsequently, he began experiencing persistent blurred and hazy vision, which he repeatedly reported to the jail superintendent. However, the jail authorities did not act on his complaints.
Khan informed Salman Safdar that he later suffered a sudden and total loss of vision in his right eye. An eye specialist from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) diagnosed that a blood clot had caused substantial damage to his eye.
Imran Khan (73) has been incarcerated since August 2023 following convictions that he and PTI allege are politically driven. The PTI founder has dealt with multiple legal challenges, including issues related to state gifts and alleged unlawful marriage, since being ousted via a no-confidence vote in 2022. Some of these convictions have been suspended or overturned, with appeals currently pending in the courts.
