Kolkata, Nov 19 (NationPress) In a significant ruling against the Mamata Banerjee administration, the Calcutta High Court has permitted Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, to conduct a public meeting at Memari in the East Burdwan district on November 21. The court overruled the state’s objections concerning this event. Nevertheless, Justice Krishna Rao has stipulated several conditions for the gathering.
While sanctioning Suvendu's rally, the judge specified that it should take place at the Uday Sangha Club ground in the Memari region.
The High Court determined that the meeting is to run from 2 PM to 7 PM, and mandated that local police and administrative authorities ensure security on the routes leading to the venue.
The court also limited the number of attendees to a maximum of 5,000 supporters and required the presence of two fire engines from the fire department during the event.
It is noteworthy that prior to appealing to the Calcutta High Court, the BJP had sought police approval for the gathering in Memari, which was denied due to insufficient security arrangements. Consequently, the party turned to the High Court for relief.
In the past, the BJP has similarly sought the court’s permission for various meetings led by Suvendu.
Recently, Suvendu participated in a BJP procession from Baranilpur to Curzon Gate in East Burdwan. Although the BJP initially aimed to conduct this procession on November 5, they were compelled to seek judicial approval after being denied permission by the state.
The state government argued that November 5 coincided with the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, leading to large gatherings in the area, thus denying the procession request.
Eventually, the BJP adjusted their plans and conducted the procession on November 9.
