Yaoundé (Cameroon), Jan 27 (NationPress) The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has enacted a suspension on four referees along with a match inspector due to disputed refereeing calls during a matchup in the nation’s premier football competition, the MTN Elite One Championship.

In an official statement, FECAFOOT highlighted that the match, which took place on the inaugural day of the championship between Victoria United and PWD of Bamenda, was "tainted by evidently dubious refereeing decisions".

The event, hosted by Victoria United on Sunday, featured four yellow cards issued to PWD Bamenda, two goals from PWD disallowed, and three penalties awarded to Victoria United, as per reports from Xinhua.

"The officiating crew and the match inspector involved in the aforementioned match have been temporarily suspended from all duties while the ongoing disciplinary investigation is in progress," stated FECAFOOT in a release on Monday night.

FECAFOOT is also probing "serious allegations of match-fixing" in the game between Dynamo Douala and AS Fortuna, which occurred on the same day.

Match-fixing concerns in Cameroonian football have recently gained attention, with stakeholders increasingly worried about the rising incidents of alleged result manipulation in the MTN Elite One Championship and lower divisions. "FECAFOOT reaffirms its steadfast dedication to integrity, transparency in competitions, and fair play, which are vital for the advancement of national football. It emphasizes that only the results on the field should determine the outcomes," the statement asserted.

Recently, Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation, was handed a four-match suspension for alleged misconduct during his team’s defeat to Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations.

FECAFOOT acknowledged the disciplinary committee's decision from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to suspend its president, accompanied by a $20,000 fine, but expressed that it "lacks any explicit justification". "FECAFOOT further indicates that the swift procedure leading to this outcome raises significant concerns regarding the essential requirements of a fair trial," the federation commented.

On Monday, CAF announced that it is investigating incidents during the quarterfinals featuring Cameroon against Morocco, as well as Algeria against Nigeria.

Point of View
