Ottawa, Sep 29 (NationPress) The Canadian government has officially classified the Bishnoi gang, led by the notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, as a terrorist organization due to its engagement in murder, shootings, arson, and instilling fear through extortion and intimidation.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Public Safety, "Acts of violence and terror have no place in Canada, particularly those aimed at specific communities to foster a climate of fear and intimidation. This is why Gary Anandasangaree, the Minister of Public Safety, announced that the government has officially listed the Bishnoi Gang as a terrorist entity under the Criminal Code."
This designation allows for the freezing or seizure of any assets owned by the group in Canada, including property, vehicles, and funds. It also equips Canadian law enforcement with enhanced tools to prosecute offenses related to terrorism, including financing, travel, and recruitment. For instance, it is illegal for anyone in Canada, or Canadians abroad, to knowingly engage with property that is owned or controlled by a terrorist group.
The statement further noted that it is a criminal act to provide any property, directly or indirectly, knowing that it will be used by or benefit a terrorist organization. The Criminal Code designation can also assist immigration and border officials in making decisions regarding admissibility to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
"The Bishnoi Gang is a transnational criminal organization primarily operating out of India. They maintain a presence in Canada and are active in areas with substantial diaspora communities. The gang is involved in murder, shootings, and arson, and thrives on terror through extortion and intimidation. They create an atmosphere of insecurity by targeting community members, businesses, and cultural leaders," the statement elaborated.
The Ministry emphasized that classifying the Bishnoi Gang will bolster the efforts of Canadian security, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies in countering their criminal activities and ensuring community safety.
"Every individual in Canada deserves to feel secure in their home and community, and it is our essential duty as a government to safeguard them. Specific communities have been victims of terror, violence, and intimidation from the Bishnoi Gang. By designating this group as a criminal terrorist organization, we gain more powerful and effective tools to confront and halt their activities," stated Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety.
