New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) Congress Member of Parliament Jairam Ramesh on Friday highlighted the issue of a substantial sum of cash found at the residence of a Delhi High Court judge during the Rajya Sabha session.

Ramesh insisted on a transparent and effective response to this troubling incident.

During the discussions, Ramesh urged Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to address the matter publicly. He also reminded the assembly of a previous notice concerning the impeachment of an Allahabad High Court judge, underlining the need to maintain the integrity of the judiciary.

In reply, Chairman Dhankhar emphasized the importance of a consistent and impartial method to tackle allegations of misconduct across various sectors. He pointed out that when similar situations involve politicians, bureaucrats, or industrialists, there is immediate public and institutional outcry.

"A systemic response is essential -- one that is transparent, accountable, and effective," he stated.

Dhankhar assured the House of his intention to collaborate with the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition to investigate the potential for a structured dialogue on the issue during the ongoing session.

Reflecting on previous legislative actions, Dhankhar referred to a historic Bill aimed at judicial accountability, which was passed with overwhelming support in the Rajya Sabha and later ratified by 16 state assemblies.

He questioned the current status of this Bill, suggesting that had it been enforced appropriately, occurrences like the cash discovery at the judge's residence might have been prevented. "Had we resolved that issue earlier, we might not be facing such problems now," he commented.

Dhankhar also remarked that the Rajya Sabha possesses a unique capability to address these matters, given the presence of prominent leaders from both ruling and opposition parties. "With such esteemed individuals in attendance, I believe their insights and those of other members will be invaluable," he said.

Numerous media sources reported on Friday that a significant quantity of cash was retrieved from the residence of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma when firefighters responded to a blaze.

Reports indicate that the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended transferring Justice Varma back to his original court - the Allahabad High Court.
