New Delhi, Nov 14 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has effectively orchestrated the return of wanted fugitive Jagdish Punetha from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as stated in an official announcement on Friday.
Punetha, who was subject to a Red Notice issued earlier this year, is being pursued by the Uttarakhand Police under FIR No 239/2021 filed at the Pithoragarh police station due to charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy.
After the registration of the case, he escaped India and took refuge in the UAE.
The CBI, functioning as India’s National Central Bureau (NCB) for Interpol, worked in conjunction with UAE law enforcement to locate and capture Punetha.
The Red Corner Notice against him was issued through Interpol in May this year at the behest of the Uttarakhand Police, allowing authorities worldwide to monitor his activities.
Upon his arrest in the UAE, a contingent from the Uttarakhand Police traveled to the Gulf nation for his extradition. The team successfully returned him to India on Thursday, as noted in the statement.
The CBI emphasized that Red Notices from Interpol are disseminated globally to aid in the identification and apprehension of fugitives. Acting as the NCB, the CBI collaborates closely with Indian law enforcement through the BHARATPOL platform to seek and render support via Interpol.
Earlier in September, another fugitive, Parminder Singh, wanted for terrorism-related charges, was also extradited from the UAE under CBI's coordination. Singh was pursued by the Punjab Police for allegedly financing terrorist activities.
According to the agency, over 150 wanted criminals have been successfully repatriated to India in recent years due to these collaborative international efforts.
