CEC and Election Commissioners Meet Political Parties in Chennai to Ensure Fair Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 26 (NationPress) In an important preparatory meeting for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, alongside Election Commissioners Dr Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr Vivek Joshi, convened with representatives from various recognized national and state political parties in Chennai on Thursday.
The gathering included the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tamil Nadu and senior officials from the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Participating in the discussions were representatives from six national parties: the Aam Aadmi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India-Marxist, Congress, and National People’s Party, along with state parties like the ruling DMK, AIADMK, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK).
Officials noted that many political factions commended the Commission for the efficient and peaceful execution of the recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, recognizing the efforts made to update and refine voter lists ahead of the elections.
Nonetheless, certain parties expressed concerns regarding the ongoing issue of monetary influence and the distribution of inducements during the electoral process. They requested the Commission to implement stricter measures to combat these malpractices and ensure a fair electoral environment.
A significant demand that arose from the meeting was for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections to occur in a single phase, with the majority of parties believing that a one-day polling would enhance administrative focus and diminish prolonged political strife.
Furthermore, some parties urged the Commission to consider major festival dates when finalizing the election timetable to prevent any inconvenience for voters.
In response to these concerns, CEC Gyanesh Kumar assured all involved parties that elections in India are conducted in strict accordance with the law, ensuring a free, fair, and transparent process. He reiterated that the ECI would take decisive action against any inducement-related activities and enforce necessary measures against violations. This interaction is seen as part of the Commission's broader consultative strategy leading up to the critical 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
