Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Aizawl, Feb 19 (NationPress) The government has set aside Rs 491 crore for the development of the Tripura-Mizoram natural gas pipeline initiative, as stated by Mizoram's Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, B Lalchhanzova, on Thursday.
In response to a question raised by opposition BJP MLA K. Beichhua during the Mizoram Assembly session, the Minister revealed that the Centre has allocated a total budget of Rs 9,265 crore for the comprehensive North East Natural Gas Pipeline Grid.
From this total, Rs 491 crore is specifically allocated for a 119.5-km section of the pipeline that will connect Panisagar in northern Tripura to Aizawl, aimed at supplying natural gas for Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections primarily for cooking.
The terminal station for this pipeline project will be located at Sihhmui, approximately 21 km from Aizawl. The project is being managed by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL), with around 45 percent of the physical work already finished.
An official indicated that the entire ambitious project is anticipated to be completed by December 2027. Once the pipeline installation reaches Sihhmui, the government-owned Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL) will initiate the establishment of the local distribution network to offer PNG connections to households in Aizawl.
After IGGL finalizes the main pipeline, TNGCL will start providing PNG connections in Aizawl and Mamit districts, adjacent to Tripura, ensuring that residents have access to clean and convenient cooking fuel by early 2028.
TNGCL ranks among the fastest-growing natural gas distribution companies in Eastern India. Founded on July 10, 1990, it is a partnership between GAIL (India) Ltd, Tripura Industrial Development Corporation Ltd, a state-owned enterprise, and Assam Gas Company Ltd, a government entity of Assam.
An official from TNGCL stated that they provide eco-friendly, cost-efficient natural gas to domestic, commercial, industrial, and transport sectors throughout West Tripura and Gomati districts.
The company boasts an almost 100 percent reliability record in gas supply. Not only is TNGCL the most dependable supplier of Piped Natural Gas (PNG), but it also pioneered the establishment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations across Eastern India.
Currently, over 50,000 vehicles of various types in Tripura are powered by environmentally friendly and cost-effective CNG, representing a significant shift toward cleaner mobility.
TNGCL also provides PNG connections to thousands of households in West Tripura and Gomati districts for cooking, greatly contributing to the adoption of cleaner energy sources in the region.
