The suspect, Salman, who had escaped from Chennai, was captured by the Andhra Pradesh Government Railway Police in Nellore on Wednesday morning. He was subsequently transferred to the custody of the Chennai Police for further investigation.
Authorities are prioritizing the recovery of additional stolen items and gathering more information about Salman's accomplices.
Earlier today, one of the principal suspects, Jaffer, was shot dead during a police encounter. Official reports indicate that Jaffer fired upon police officers during an operation aimed at retrieving stolen jewelry.
In response, the police returned fire, resulting in his death. His remains have been sent to the Royapettah Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Jaffer, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended on Tuesday alongside his associate Suraj at Chennai Airport while they were attempting to board a flight to New Delhi. Both individuals are suspected of being involved in numerous chain-snatching incidents throughout Chennai.
The encounter allegedly occurred in the Taramani area, where police had taken Jaffer to recover the stolen jewelry.
During the operation, he reportedly assaulted Inspector Buhari and attempted to flee, which prompted the police to fire their weapons.
Police officials disclosed that Jaffer had been evading capture since 2020 and was wanted by the Maharashtra Police. He is suspected of being involved in close to 50 chain-snatching cases. Together with Suraj, he targeted morning joggers and pedestrians in locations like East Coast Road (ECR), Adyar, and Besant Nagar.
The pair had stolen gold jewelry valued at around Rs 10 lakh, roughly equivalent to 16 sovereigns. During the operation, law enforcement also confiscated a motorcycle and a firearm used by Jaffer.
