Chennai's Postal Voting for Seniors and Disabled Scheduled for April 15-16
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 12 (NationPress) The postal voting process for senior citizens and differently-abled voters in Chennai is scheduled for April 15, with April 16 set aside as an extra day for those who cannot vote on the initial day, as reported by officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation.
This initiative is aligned with the Election Commission's commitment to fostering inclusive participation in the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
In total, 23,415 senior citizens aged 85 and older, along with 12,501 differently-abled voters, have been identified across 16 constituencies in the city. Approximately 8,947 of these voters have chosen to vote from home using the postal ballot option by submitting Form 12D.
Officials have assured that extensive arrangements are being established to guarantee a smooth and transparent voting process.
To facilitate this, 96 polling teams will be dispatched throughout the city to collect votes directly from voters' homes. Each team will consist of two polling officers, a police officer, a videographer, and a micro-observer, all tasked with ensuring strict compliance with electoral protocols.
Those utilizing this facility will receive prior notification regarding the date and time of the polling team's visit.
Authorities have emphasized that all essential measures will be implemented to ensure that the voting process is conducted freely, fairly, and in complete confidentiality.
Additionally, polling personnel involved in election duties will also have the opportunity to cast their postal ballots from April 16 to 17, with voting taking place at three designated centers in the city, with final locations to be confirmed soon.
Training for the polling teams occurred on April 8 at Ripon Buildings, overseen by Chennai Corporation Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran.
During this training session, officials were instructed to guarantee that voters can exercise their right to vote independently, free from external influence, while maintaining the secrecy of the ballot.
Once voters have cast their votes, they will seal their ballot papers and place them in secure ballot boxes carried by polling teams. The ballots collected will be documented daily, stored securely under the supervision of returning officers, and the information will be electronically submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the process.
