Tamil Nadu Launches Doorstep Voting for Seniors and PwDs
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 21 (NationPress) In light of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a novel doorstep voting service designed to enhance accessibility and inclusiveness within the voting process. This initiative primarily targets senior citizens over the age of 85 and persons with disabilities (PwDs) who possess more than 40 percent disability, allowing them to cast their votes from the comfort of their homes.
Eligible voters will be provided with Form 12D, which facilitates the option for postal ballot voting from home. Distribution of these forms is currently in progress.
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are visiting the homes of qualified voters to deliver Form 12D and guide them through the voting procedure. They will also collect the completed forms directly from the voters, ensuring a seamless experience.
As per the guidelines, the filled Form 12D must be submitted within five days of the election notification. Practically, voters are expected to return their completed forms to polling officials by April 4. After submission, the Returning Officer will process the applications and arrange for voting at the voter’s residence via postal ballot.
Election authorities have established a support system for those who may face difficulties connecting with their respective BLOs. Such voters can contact the district election control room through the toll-free helpline numbers 1913 or 1800 425 7012.
Officials at the control room will liaise with the relevant BLOs to ensure eligible voters receive Form 12D and are incorporated into the doorstep voting initiative.
It is crucial to note that this facility is entirely optional. Voters who prefer to participate in person at their designated polling stations are free to do so without submitting Form 12D, following the standard voting procedure on election day.
The rollout of doorstep voting underscores the Election Commission’s ongoing commitment to making elections more inclusive, ensuring that no eligible voter is overlooked due to age or physical challenges.
