Chennai, Jan 18 (NationPress) With the escalating impact of air pollution becoming increasingly evident, the Greater Chennai Corporation is set to implement cutting-edge technology for monitoring air quality throughout the city. In a significant environmental effort aimed at raising public consciousness and fostering cleaner surroundings, the municipal authority has revealed its intentions to install digital environmental sensor boards at 100 sites distributed across Chennai's 15 administrative zones.

This initiative is tailored to provide residents with real-time data on air quality within their communities.

According to officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation, the sensor boards will present extensive environmental data in an easy-to-understand digital format, enabling the public to grasp pollution levels and associated climatic conditions.

As part of an initial trial, a digital air quality display board has already been positioned near the entrance of the Ripon Building, which serves as the headquarters of the Chennai Corporation.

Building on the positive feedback, the Corporation aims to finalize the installation of all 100 digital boards by the end of February. This project, involving an estimated budget of Rs 6.36 crore, will see the boards strategically placed at traffic signal junctions and densely populated or high-traffic locales throughout the city. These placements are chosen to maximize visibility and citizen engagement, particularly in areas more susceptible to elevated pollution levels due to vehicle traffic and congestion.

Each digital sensor board will deliver real-time data on 19 distinct environmental parameters. These parameters encompass levels of particulate matter and hazardous gases in the air, wind speed, rainfall, air pressure, temperature, and other crucial indicators that affect air quality and public health.

The information will be continuously updated, granting residents immediate access to current environmental conditions. Officials are confident that making such data publicly accessible will play a vital role in enhancing environmental awareness among citizens.

By recognizing how daily activities influence air quality, residents are expected to adopt more eco-friendly habits and support initiatives aimed at maintaining a cleaner city. This initiative is also perceived as a step towards reinforcing Chennai's environmental monitoring framework and aligning urban governance with smart-city and sustainability objectives. Once fully operational, the digital air quality sensor boards are anticipated to act as a powerful tool for both public awareness and policy formulation, aiding in long-term environmental preservation and enhancing the quality of life for Chennai’s residents.
