Chennai, Aug 7 (NationPress) Commuters in Chennai will soon enjoy the convenience of real-time information regarding bus routes and arrival schedules thanks to the deployment of digital LED boards at 616 bus stops and terminals throughout the city.

This venture is a component of the 'Intelligent Transport System' (ITS) initiative, collaboratively executed by Chennai Smart City Limited, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC).

The LED boards, reminiscent of those found in railway stations, will harness SIM-based power and Internet connectivity to deliver live updates.

Available in three formats — 10-line, four-line, and two-line displays — the boards are customized to cater to the specific needs of each site.

In tandem with this, over 2,600 MTC buses are being outfitted with automatic vehicle location devices to transmit real-time data to both the LED boards and a forthcoming mobile application.

“Passengers will be able to monitor bus locations in real time via their smartphones or laptops,” stated MTC Assistant Manager (Projects-II) Saravana Raja.

Additionally, depot management software is being introduced to enhance crew scheduling and attendance monitoring.

The ITS project contract, established in July 2023 for a duration of 31 months, includes five years of maintenance following installation.

Work commenced in December 2024, with 406 boards already installed and testing in progress at over 50 locations.

Out of the 94 four-line boards earmarked for major terminals, 17 have already been put in place.

The completion of the entire project is anticipated by next month, although commuter feedback has been varied.

Krishnaveni Ramdass, a senior citizen and frequent MTC bus rider, remarked, “This will be very beneficial, especially for elderly passengers who struggle with mobile applications.”

Conversely, Suresh Kumar, another regular rider, raised concerns about existing faulty GPS units in some buses and recurring crashes of the MTC app, stating, “If these issues persist, the new system could add to the frustration.”

Consultants involved in the project remain hopeful. After pilot tests at six locations, including Broadway, Co-optex, and Express Avenue, they report stable performance from the system.

“We anticipate minimal glitches once it becomes fully operational,” one consultant mentioned. Officials are confident that the ITS project will modernize Chennai’s public transport network, enhance punctuality, and provide a more reliable commuting experience for the city's numerous daily bus users.

Point of View

I believe that the introduction of real-time digital bus arrival displays in Chennai signifies a crucial step towards modernizing public transport. While this initiative has the potential to enhance commuter experience, concerns regarding reliability must be addressed to ensure it meets the diverse needs of the city's population.
