Cancer should not be seen as a death sentence: Chiranjeevi

Hyderabad, Feb 4 (NationPress) - The renowned Tollywood actor K. Chiranjeevi emphasized on Wednesday that cancer should not be perceived as a fatal diagnosis, advocating for the importance of early detection which can enable patients to conquer the illness and resume their everyday lives.

While inaugurating the International Cancer Day event hosted by KIMS Hospitals in Secunderabad, Chiranjeevi asserted that cancer is not a divine punishment but is often related to lifestyle choices.

He remarked that the widespread belief equating cancer with the end of life must be reconsidered.

“Seeing so many cancer survivors today demonstrates the dedication of doctors working tirelessly to save lives. With early detection, cancer can be effectively treated, allowing patients to return to their normal routines,” he said. Concerned about the rising instances of children diagnosed with cancer, he urged the community to stay alert and consult healthcare professionals promptly if symptoms arise.

Dr. B. Bhaskar Rao, CMD of KIMS Group of Hospitals, mentioned that the fear and stigma surrounding cancer must be addressed. He pointed out that advanced medical treatments, including robotic surgeries, are now accessible in India. “In the past, patients had to seek treatment abroad. Now, individuals from other countries come to India for advanced healthcare,” he said, reinforcing that early diagnosis is a key factor in battling cancer.

Dr. Madhu Devarasetty, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon who organized the event, noted that cancer was once thought to primarily affect individuals over the age of 40 or 50, but it is increasingly being diagnosed in children as young as five and ten. He linked this rise to genetic predisposition, radiation exposure, chemicals, fertilizers, alcohol, smoking, stress, and lifestyle diseases like diabetes.

“Awareness is crucial; many patients seek help only in advanced stages of the disease. Therefore, public education is essential,” he stated. KIMS Hospitals has created a Cancer Fight Support Group to assist and support patients and their families. Those who have undergone treatment and returned to their normal lives are stepping forward to spread the message that cancer is treatable, encouraging others who might be afraid of seeking care.
