Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 13 (NationPress) Well-known tribal leader C.K. Janu expressed her intention to align with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala on Monday, revealing that she has communicated her decision to the leadership of the alliance without any preconditions.
The 55-year-old leader gained recognition two decades ago when she led a pivotal protest by landless tribal communities at Muthanga village in Wayanad in 2003, under the banner of the Adivasi Gothra Maha Sabha (AGMS).
This protest aimed to pressure the state government to fulfill its 2001 commitment regarding land allotments. It escalated into violence when police fired on demonstrators, resulting in the death of a police officer and a tribal protester. The then Chief Minister A. K. Antony faced severe criticism for his handling of the situation.
Emerging from that protest, Janu became a strong advocate for tribal rights. Initially, she aligned herself with the Left movement but later took an independent political path.
In 2016, she established her own political party, the Janathipathya Rashtriya Sabha (JRS), and ran for the Kerala Assembly elections from Sultan Bathery in collaboration with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), although she was not successful. Earlier this year, JRS departed from the NDA, and since then, Janu has been considering a new political alignment.
Her decision to join the UDF is perceived as a tactical move ahead of the upcoming local body elections and the 2026 Kerala Assembly polls.
However, insiders within the Congress have indicated that the party is somewhat uncertain about her inclusion.
Wayanad, represented in the Lok Sabha by Priyanka Gandhi, is home to a significant tribal population, and analysts believe that her involvement could bolster the UDF's outreach to tribal communities.
As Kerala prepares for local body elections later this year, followed by Assembly polls in April-May next year, the UDF is eager to expand its social base through strategic partnerships.
Despite some internal hesitations, Janu’s lack of preconditions is anticipated to favor her, increasing the likelihood of her official entry into the UDF.
