In his address to the press, the Chief Minister stated that the state government is committed to providing complete assistance to the CBI throughout the investigation and expressed his determination to ensure that stringent measures are taken against those accountable.
Ajithkumar, a young man who was taken into police custody at Tiruppuvanam, passed away under suspicious circumstances, leading to widespread public outcry and demands for accountability.
The Chief Minister revealed that following the incident, six police officers associated with the case were promptly suspended, with five of them arrested and charged with murder.
Initially, the investigation was handed over to the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID), but due to escalating public concern, the state government has opted to shift the case to the CBI.
Additionally, in an administrative overhaul, the district superintendent of police has been placed on the waiting list, while the deputy superintendent of police has been suspended pending further investigation.
The Chief Minister also conveyed his condolences to Ajithkumar's family, assuring them that the inquiry would be conducted in a manner that is fair, transparent, and impartial, with a commitment to delivering justice.
“Such incidents are profoundly troubling and entirely unacceptable,” the Chief Minister remarked.
“Law enforcement must uphold human rights during their operations. Any failure to do so undermines public trust and will not be tolerated.”
He reiterated the government's commitment to maintaining the rule of law and pledged to take all necessary measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
“This government firmly advocates for justice, accountability, and the safeguarding of citizens’ rights,” he added.
The custodial death has ignited political and civil society reactions throughout Tamil Nadu, with opposition parties and human rights organizations calling for an independent investigation and accountability for those at fault.
The Chief Minister’s decision to engage the CBI is anticipated to respond to calls for impartiality in the investigation.
