Concerns Raised Over Detention of Baloch Leaders in Pakistan
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Quetta, March 17 (NationPress) A prominent human rights organization in Pakistan has raised critical alarms regarding the ongoing detention and legal proceedings against leaders of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), including Mahrang Baloch. These leaders have been held for nearly a year under what are described as multiple fabricated charges before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Quetta.
The BYC indicated that the detainees expressed their concerns in court on February 7, revealing their lack of trust in the presiding judge. The organization emphasized that access to a fair, transparent, and impartial judicial process is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution.
"The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) has articulated deep concerns over the prolonged detention and current trials of its leaders, including Dr. Mahrang Baloch, who have been unjustly incarcerated for nearly a year while facing fabricated cases in the ATC of Quetta. On February 7, 2026, the detainees formally communicated their issues before the court, citing a lack of confidence in the presiding judge," stated the BYC in an official release.
"The remarks and procedural decisions have significantly undermined their trust, leading to fears that a fair trial is unattainable under the existing circumstances. When objections were raised regarding perceived bias, the requests for legal consideration were not processed in line with established legal protocols, particularly the requirement for such concerns to be escalated to a higher judicial authority for resolution," it added.
The BYC has appealed to judicial authorities, the legal community, and the Balochistan Bar Council to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and ensure that the detainees' concerns are addressed according to the law.
In light of these developments, the detained leaders have filed a petition with the Registrar of the Balochistan High Court and the Balochistan Bar Council, seeking intervention to protect their constitutional and legal rights. The petition requests a review of the cases and their transfer to a neutral court to ensure that fundamental principles of justice and fair trials are upheld. The Baloch Yakjehti Committee reiterates that access to a fair, transparent, and impartial judicial process is a constitutional right and aligns with international human rights standards.
"Any hint of bias in judicial proceedings not only affects those accused but also erodes public trust in the judicial system. We urge the relevant judicial authorities, legal community, and the Balochistan Bar Council to ensure that the detainees' concerns are legally addressed. Transferring the cases to a neutral venue is essential to guarantee that justice is not just done but also perceived as being done," it further stated.
On March 1, the Human Rights Council of Balochistan raised alarms about the deteriorating health condition of Mahrang Baloch, noting that she had been denied appropriate and timely medical care despite her critical state. The council urged authorities to ensure proper medical treatment for Mahrang Baloch.
"We are extremely concerned about the rapidly declining health of Dr. Mahrang Baloch, a prominent human rights advocate, who has been unjustly detained for almost a year under politically motivated and baseless charges. Despite a recent examination at Sheikh Zayed Hospital confirming her critical condition, she continues to be denied adequate medical care," stated the Human Rights Council of Balochistan.
"This situation constitutes a grave violation of her fundamental human rights and Pakistan's international obligations regarding humane treatment of detainees. We demand the immediate provision of comprehensive medical treatment without delay and the unconditional release of Dr. Mahrang Baloch along with other detained BYC leaders. The world is watching; this injustice must end now," it concluded.
