Concerns Rise Over Mahrang Baloch's Health in Detention
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Quetta, March 2 (NationPress) The human rights organization Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) has voiced serious alarm regarding the declining health of its chief organizer, Mahrang Baloch, who is currently in unlawful detention. They are urging Pakistani authorities to provide immediate medical assistance and facilitate her release.
Mahrang's health has reportedly deteriorated significantly during her six-month custody. The BYC noted that she has submitted numerous requests for medical attention to the jail authorities, all of which have allegedly been disregarded.
Following this, her legal representatives approached the court, leading to an examination by a prison doctor who advised further medical tests. Unfortunately, she has not been transferred to a hospital for these necessary evaluations, the BYC stated.
The situation escalated on February 18, when Mahrang's condition worsened, resulting in her being moved to Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Lahore for medical assessment.
The medical examination revealed a serious spinal issue, with doctors recommending rest and appropriate medical care. Despite this, the court has continued to deny her bail on questionable legal grounds, insisting on a prolonged trial without any legitimate charges, according to the BYC.
The organization emphasized that Mahrang has not committed any offense other than advocating for human rights and justice, labeling the denial of medical care and her continued imprisonment as severe violations of fundamental human rights.
The BYC also pointed out that nearly a year has elapsed since Mahrang and other BYC leaders were illegally detained under fabricated FIRs, claiming they remain incarcerated without credible evidence.
The organization is calling for immediate medical treatment for Mahrang and the release of all unlawfully detained leaders.
Last week, the BYC condemned the ongoing imprisonment of Mahrang and fellow leaders, describing it as part of a systematic pattern of legal and procedural manipulation by the Pakistani government.
They stressed that the delays in bail proceedings have serious implications, extending detention periods, increasing uncertainty, and raising public concerns about the independence of judicial processes in politically sensitive cases.
Reiterating that peaceful political activism should not be equated with terrorism, the BYC remarked, "Asserting constitutional rights and speaking out against enforced disappearances are not crimes. The ongoing detention of peaceful leaders through procedural delays sends a concerning signal regarding the democratic space in the nation."
