New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) A coalition of over 200 distinguished senior citizens, which includes former ambassadors, retired military personnel, bureaucrats, and senior lawyers, voiced their concerns on Tuesday regarding the perceived conduct and behaviour of Rahul Gandhi, the prominent Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. They argue that his actions undermine the dignity and efficacy of the nation's Parliament.

The letter, signed by 204 notable individuals, features 116 retired army officers, 84 former bureaucrats, four ambassadors, and four advocates.

In a letter directed at the populace, which was made public by former Jammu and Kashmir DGP S.P. Vaid, it states, “The occurrences on 12th March are profoundly troubling. Parliament is the highest platform for democratic discourse where the collective will of the people finds expression. It is justly regarded as the temple of democracy, a space where elected representatives convene to discuss matters of national significance. Regrettably, Shri Rahul Gandhi has consistently lowered the standards of public dialogue and decorum through theatrics both within and outside Parliament.”

The signatories opined that such behaviour indicates a pattern driven more by a sense of personal privilege than respect for democratic institutions, treating Parliament as a stage for provocation rather than a venue for serious discussion.

“In doing so, precious public time and resources are squandered. Parliamentary sessions must not be interrupted or trivialized in ways that compromise the function of this essential democratic institution. In his attempts to scrutinize the current government, the actions of Shri Rahul Gandhi are tarnishing the reputation of our nation and our democracy. This is particularly alarming given his role as the Leader of Opposition,” the letter emphasizes.

“As guardians of a constitutional institution that embodies the democratic aspirations of more than a billion citizens, Members of Parliament must remain aware that their actions hold both symbolic and institutional importance. The credibility of Parliament is strengthened when its members adhere to the traditions of propriety and restraint that have always characterized parliamentary life,” the signatories conveyed.

They expressed that, as citizens who have dedicated decades to public service, they find it deeply disheartening to observe repeated actions by Rahul Gandhi and his associates that could potentially diminish the effectiveness of this democratic temple.

“As individuals committed to upholding and enhancing India’s democratic institutions, it is our duty to highlight conduct that detracts from the dignity of Parliament, an institution that represents the sovereign will of the Indian people. The actions observed reflect a concerning sense of arrogance and entitlement that is incompatible with a constitutional democracy, especially from the Leader of the Opposition. Shri Rahul Gandhi should apologize to the nation for this behaviour and engage in self-reflection. The Parliament of India holds a singular and elevated position within the constitutional framework of the country.

“Hence, the dignity of Parliament is not merely a matter of tradition but a crucial component of the constitutional ethos that governs our democracy. The behaviour of members within the Parliament premises must, therefore, adhere to the highest standards of propriety and institutional respect,” the letter concluded.

“Shri Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by several Members of Parliament, was observed sitting on the steps of Parliament, having tea and biscuits, in a manner utterly unbecoming of members of the country’s highest legislative body. The steps of Parliament should not serve as a stage for spectacle or political theatrics. Such behaviour within the Parliament’s precincts signifies a blatant disregard for established norms of conduct and decorum. It showcases an attitude of arrogance and entitlement, revealing a troubling lack of respect for an institution that embodies the democratic will of the people,” the letter pointed out.

“Parliamentary practice and longstanding conventions recognize that the sanctity associated with the Chambers of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha extends equally to all areas within the parliamentary precincts, including its stairs, corridors, and lobbies. These spaces are not incidental but integral parts of Parliament itself, and the conduct expected therein must reflect the institution's dignity, ensuring that the solemnity, authority, and institutional sanctity of Parliament are fully upheld,” the letter added.
