Chennai, Nov 12 (NationPress) As the December 4 deadline looms, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) faces significant challenges in gathering completed forms for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Despite distributing nearly 41 percent of the forms throughout the city, the civic body has only received a small number of responses, as residents are unclear on how to fill out specific sections.
The primary reason for the delay is the confusion surrounding the requirement to provide family information from the 2005 electoral roll. Numerous residents express they are unaware of their parents’ or relatives’ electoral details and worry that inaccuracies may result in their forms being rejected.
Consequently, thousands of voters are holding onto the documents, awaiting clearer instructions from election officials. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in various zones have reported alarmingly low response rates.
In Royapuram, a BLO mentioned that out of 550 forms distributed, only 10 were returned so far. In Chepauk, another BLO reported no returns from the 1,111 forms issued. Officers noted that while residents accept the forms, they often delay filling them out due to confusion over required details.
To address the slow response, BLOs have increased door-to-door visits and are organizing assistance camps to help residents. However, officials indicate that many citizens remain unprepared and frequently request them to return at a later time.
Officials clarified that voters need not worry if they cannot remember or find the 2005 roll details — they can still submit the forms with incomplete family information.
The Election Commission has also recommended that individuals can verify their 2005 voter roll details on the ECI website.
If information is missing, citizens can attach any one of ten accepted government-issued documents as proof of identity and residence. As the submission deadline approaches, officials worry that a last-minute surge could overwhelm the system and leave little time to correct mistakes.
With several lakh forms still outstanding, BLOs caution that unresolved confusion may impact voter enrollments in multiple constituencies unless clear instructions reach the public promptly.
