New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) Devender Yadav, the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, declared on Monday that the BJP administration must take immediate and practical measures to restore the heavily polluted Yamuna.
He criticized the government's supposed attempts to divert attention through announcements and asserted that instead of engaging in superficial activities like “cruise tourism”, tangible actions should be prioritized to combat the river's pollution.
According to the Delhi Pollution Control Board, the pollution levels in the river are currently 6,400 times greater than the allowable limits.
Yadav questioned who would be willing to enjoy a boat ride on the toxic stretch of the Yamuna in Delhi, considering the severe health risks posed by the polluted air in the vicinity.
He also raised concerns about water scarcity, noting that numerous neighborhoods in Delhi receive contaminated water that is unsuitable even for laundry, forcing residents to rely on the tanker mafia and bottled water for drinking.
Yadav reminded the BJP of its electoral “guarantee” to promptly provide clean drinking water through the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) pipelines upon taking office.
He accused the BJP government of failing to deliver on any of its campaign promises, continuously delaying their implementation with various excuses.
Criticizing the procrastination in cleaning the Yamuna, Yadav mentioned that when Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva publicly bathed in the polluted Yamuna for political exposure, it gave the impression that the BJP would prioritize the river's cleanup once in power.
However, the Congress leader noted that the BJP has also relegated the river's cleanup to a lower priority, similar to its predecessor, AAP.
Yadav insisted that the BJP government should stop deceiving the public by pushing back its electoral commitments and instead take urgent action to purify the toxic Yamuna, as air and water pollution has become a significant health crisis for the residents of Delhi.
