Is Congress in Telangana's Jagtial District Facing a Ticket Distribution Crisis?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Feb 3 (NationPress) Tensions are rising within the Congress party in Telangana's Jagtial district regarding the distribution of party tickets for the upcoming municipal elections. Senior leader T. Jeevan Reddy has publicly voiced his displeasure over the party's decision to allocate more tickets to his rival M. Sanjay Kumar's faction. While Reddy's group has received 20 tickets, Kumar's supporters have secured 30 tickets for the municipal elections scheduled on February 11.
A substantial number of Congress members congregated at Reddy's residence on Tuesday as he convened a meeting with his loyalists to plot their next steps. The rivalry between Reddy and Kumar has intensified, especially since Kumar is among the 10 MLAs from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) who shifted allegiance to Congress in 2024.
Reddy, who faced defeat against Kumar in the 2023 elections, has openly challenged the party leadership regarding Kumar's inclusion in their ranks. On January 21, Reddy stormed out of a meeting at the party's state headquarters, Gandhi Bhavan, in protest of Kumar's attendance.
Reddy questioned, "How can the party permit an outsider to participate in an internal meeting? Why is a member of an Opposition party here?" Both factions have been in a constant struggle for dominance in the district, and attempts by the party leadership to reconcile Reddy's grievances have proven futile as he fears Kumar's rising influence.
This internal strife has complicated the ticket allocation process for the municipal elections in Jagtial and Raikal municipalities, with Reddy's faction expressing dissatisfaction over the disproportionate ticket distribution favoring Kumar's side. Numerous candidates from both factions have submitted their nominations; however, the party predominantly issued B-forms to Kumar's supporters, further widening the divide.
