New Delhi, Oct 1 (NationPress) Congress General Secretary (Organisations) K.C. Venugopal has vocally condemned the Union government’s initiative to issue a commemorative coin and stamp honoring the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), labeling it a “deep insult” to the legacy of India’s freedom struggle and its constitutional principles.
In a post on X, Venugopal expressed his concerns regarding the justification for honoring an organization that, in his view, “collaborated with colonial rulers” and was previously banned by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
“How can an organization that was banned by Sardar Patel be honored today by the Indian Government?” he questioned.
The Congress leader further accused the RSS of undermining the principles enshrined in the Constitution, particularly social justice and secularism.
“How can those who advocate for rewriting our Constitution and destroying the social justice agenda given to us by Dr. Ambedkar be celebrated as national icons?” he stated.
These comments come at a time when discussions regarding the RSS’s ideological impact on governance and its historical role during the independence movement are intensifying.
The Congress party has consistently asserted that the RSS did not partake in the freedom struggle and has opposed its acknowledgment in official commemorations.
While the BJP, which has ideological links to the RSS, has yet to respond formally to Venugopal’s remarks, party leaders have previously defended the RSS as a cultural and nationalist entity contributing positively to society.
This controversy is likely to spark further political discourse, particularly as opposition parties ramp up their critiques ahead of imminent state elections.
The Congress has signaled its intent to continuously challenge perceived efforts to rewrite history and weaken constitutional values.
