Is Truth Being Portrayed in the Controversial 'The Kerala Story 2'?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 20 (NationPress) In response to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's remarks about the film 'The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond', Jammu & Kashmir's Leader of Opposition, Sunil Kumar Sharma, emphasized that if truthful facts are being presented, “there should be no objections.” This statement has intensified the ongoing political discourse regarding the film.
“Tharoor claimed that significant hatred was evident in 'The Kerala Story 1', with numerous conversion incidents reported, although some were later proven false. I have not personally viewed either 'The Kerala Story 1' or '2'... If inaccuracies exist, they can be contested. If truth is being depicted, what is the issue? The film illustrates the conversions and atrocities that transpired,” Sharma stated to IANS.
Previously, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor criticized the creators of the sequel, asserting that it, similar to its predecessor, fosters divisive narratives lacking factual support and risks inciting societal hatred.
Regarding the controversy, Tharoor labeled the first part a “hate-mongering film” devoid of credibility and challenged the claims of widespread religious conversions, arguing that the figures cited were inflated.
In contrast, PDP MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi remarked, “The intent behind these actions, including the manipulation of the film industry, is to dehumanize Muslims and cast them in a negative light within society and the broader social narrative.”
BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo criticized Kerala's political landscape, stating, “The current situation in Kerala is profoundly disgraceful. Regardless of whether it was the Congress or the Left Front government, incidents of appeasement, religious conversions, and systematic crimes against Hindu and Christian girls by specific radical Muslim factions have persisted over the years... reportedly receiving foreign funding and causing chaos in the state.”
Meanwhile, Purnia MP Pappu Yadav questioned the politicization of cinema, saying, “I cannot comprehend one thing. With 'The Kerala Story' and now 'The Kerala Story 2', are all independent institutions being co-opted for the BJP’s promotional agenda? Is the BJP dictating what India’s vision and representation should be? Will the BJP determine the narratives of films, politicizing them to spread hatred?”
The discourse surrounding 'The Kerala Story 2' highlights broader concerns about the intersection of cinema, politics, and social narratives in India, with leaders from various parties contributing their perspectives on the potential societal implications of films addressing sensitive religious and cultural themes.
