Why Did Coupang’s Daily User Count Drop to the 14 Million Range?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Dec 22 (NationPress) Coupang’s daily active user (DAU) figure has dropped to the 14 million range following the e-commerce giant's announcement of a significant data breach late last month, according to industry data released on Monday.
As reported by Yonhap news agency, Coupang's estimated DAU was 14.88 million as of Friday, based on data from MobileIndex, a platform managed by industry tracker IGAWorks.
This decline signifies the first instance of Coupang's daily user count falling below 15 million since October 25, when it recorded 14.91 million users.
During a span of approximately three months from early October until Friday, Coupang's daily user count dipped below 15 million only three times — from October 4-6 during the Chuseok holiday, on October 25, and December 19.
On November 29, Coupang confirmed that the personal data of 33.7 million customer accounts had been compromised, significantly exceeding the initial report of 4,500 accounts made to authorities on November 20.
This number of affected accounts is nearly two-thirds of South Korea's total population.
Considering that active users of Coupang's Product Commerce division, which includes its delivery service, reached 24.7 million in the third quarter, the scale of the breach indicates that a substantial portion of the user base may have been impacted.
The exposed data included users' names, phone numbers, email addresses, and delivery addresses.
Following the announcement, Coupang's DAU momentarily surged, rising to the 17 million range from November 30 to December 3, peaking at an all-time high of 17.98 million on December 1, as users accessed the platform to review their accounts and security settings.
However, since December 10, the number has steadily decreased, returning to the mid-15 million range.
In related news, the ruling Democratic Party is set to conduct a joint parliamentary hearing involving five standing committees on December 30 and 31 to address the data breach incident.
