Initial claims underestimated the scale of the breach.

Seoul, Feb 25 (NationPress) The US-based e-commerce titan, Coupang, revealed on Wednesday that nearly 200,000 Taiwanese accounts were compromised in a recent data breach affecting approximately 33 million accounts. This announcement followed Coupang's request for cybersecurity experts from Mandiant and Palo Alto Networks to conduct a thorough forensic investigation after the breach in November 2025, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

According to the company, "This act was perpetrated by a former employee, targeting Coupang as well as our customers. While we cannot control legal proceedings, we have consistently urged that this individual be prosecuted to the fullest extent allowed by law," stated Coupang in a press release.

Mandiant's findings indicated that the unauthorized actions of the former employee involved access to around 200,000 accounts in Taiwan.

In its report, Coupang asserted that "no highly sensitive data" was compromised and emphasized that "there is no evidence suggesting that any of the accessed customer data was viewed, shared, or transferred to any other party."

"Thus far, we have not detected any misuse of customer data linked to this incident, nor is there any evidence that any Coupang customer information related to this case exists in external data sources," it further added.

Earlier this month, a collaborative investigation between public and private sectors into the significant data breach at Coupang's South Korean branch confirmed that over 33.6 million accounts were exposed.

The investigation revealed that the delivery section of Coupang's website had been accessed approximately 148 million times, with the leaked information also including shared entrance door passwords.

Coupang's initial statement suggested that only data from roughly 3,300 accounts had been breached, which drew substantial public backlash, leading the science ministry to label these claims as "ill-intended" and lacking in substance, as per the report.

Point of View

This incident highlights the vulnerabilities in corporate cybersecurity measures. The breach not only compromises user data but also raises concerns about the accountability of companies in safeguarding sensitive information. The call for legal action against the perpetrator underscores the seriousness of the situation.
