Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 2 (NationPress) The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court situated in Kamrup district, Assam, has issued an order on Monday to unfreeze the bank accounts of Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the Zubeen Garg death case, stating that the provisions of Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were not relevant to the current situation.
Additionally, the Court mandated another accused, Siddhartha Sharma, to deposit Rs. 16 lakhs with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police, as his residence had been sealed by the investigation agency.
It is important to note that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police, which was formed by the CID, submitted a comprehensive chargesheet in a Guwahati court in December 2025 concerning the death of singer Zubeen Garg.
The investigation was prompted by the mysterious death of Garg in Singapore on September 19, 2025, during a sea outing while attending the North East India Festival.
This chargesheet was reported to be a lengthy document, comprising between 3,500 and over 12,000 pages, reflecting the thoroughness of the investigation and the testimonies of witnesses.
Seven individuals were named in the chargesheet presented to the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Guwahati.
Murder charges under various sections of the law were filed against four individuals, including festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, a band member named Shekharjyoti Goswami, and co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta.
Garg’s cousin, a suspended Assam Police officer, Sandipan Garg, faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The other accused, including Garg’s personal security officers, were implicated in the chargesheet for associated crimes such as criminal conspiracy and breach of trust.
The SIT’s chargesheet was founded on a substantial amount of evidence, bolstered by witness accounts from over 300 individuals, along with documentary proof and forensic results submitted to the court.
