Thiruvananthapuram, March 15 (NationPress) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has officially presented its candidate roster for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Kerala, nominating a total of 75 individuals, which includes Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and nine Cabinet ministers.

Shortly after the election schedule was announced, the party's state Secretary, M. V. Govindan, revealed that 56 sitting legislators are part of this lineup, demonstrating the party's commitment to retaining its seasoned leadership as it prepares for another significant electoral challenge.

The party has also opted to support independent candidates in six constituencies, showcasing its broader electoral strategy within the Left Democratic Front.

Govindan indicated that candidates for the remaining five constituencies would be disclosed soon.

The candidate list notably includes all nine ministers from the Left government, including Tourism Minister P. A. Mohammed Riyas, who is also the son-in-law of Vijayan.

This announcement coincided with the Election Commission's declaration that voting for all 140 Assembly constituencies in the state is set for April 9, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.

As the party rolled out its candidate list, campaign activities began to intensify across the state. Within an hour of the poll schedule release, General Education Minister V. Sivankutty launched a roadshow in his constituency, reaffirming his connection with the community: "I have been with my people all these years, and now I am just starting to meet them again. Victory is certain, and we are going to return for a third consecutive term."

The Nemom constituency in Thiruvananthapuram is poised for a competitive race, where Sivankutty will face off against Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the state President of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Nemom holds a unique place in Kerala’s political history, having been the only Assembly constituency secured by the BJP when veteran leader O. Rajagopal made headlines in the 2016 elections. However, Sivankutty reclaimed the seat for the Left Front in the 2021 elections, making the constituency a focal point in the upcoming electoral battle.

Point of View

The CPI-M's strategic candidate selection emphasizes continuity and experience, which may resonate with voters seeking stability amidst political change. This election is critical not only for the party but also for the broader political landscape in Kerala.
