Bryan Cranston Stands Up for Skyler White in ‘Breaking Bad’ Amid Fan Backlash

Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, April 13 (NationPress) Acclaimed Hollywood star Bryan Cranston has stepped forward to defend his character's spouse, Skyler White, in the legendary series ‘Breaking Bad’.
Skyler White, portrayed by Anna Gunn, faced significant backlash from fans of the Vince Gilligan drama for obstructing Walter White’s illicit activities, according to reports by Variety.
During a recent segment on ‘Hot Ones Versus’ alongside Frankie Muniz, Cranston was asked to explain Skyler’s actions when Muniz expressed his admiration for ‘Breaking Bad’ but admitted to disliking Skyler.
Cranston noted, “All she did was voice her concerns,” and suggested that Walter’s life might have been “significantly simpler” without her involvement.
He continued, “Now, she received a lot of negative feedback for that. First off, Anna Gunn is an extraordinary actress, but she faced comments like, ‘Why don’t you just leave him alone?’ Let’s consider this: Her husband disappears without a word, she’s expecting a child, he’s involved in the production of crystal meth, and people are dying. And she’s the villain? How can we not empathize?”
Muniz responded, “When you frame it that way, I suppose.” ‘Breaking Bad’ is widely recognized as one of the greatest television dramas ever created.
According to Variety, the show chronicles Bryan Cranston’s portrayal of Walter White, a high school chemistry educator who, after being diagnosed with lung cancer, begins manufacturing and distributing meth to financially support his family. The series garnered 16 Emmy Awards throughout its five-season duration.
The cast also included Aaron Paul, Dean Norris, Betsy Brandt, RJ Mitte, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, and Giancarlo Esposito. This isn’t the first instance of someone associated with ‘Breaking Bad’ addressing the animosity directed at Skyler.
In 2022, Vince Gilligan shared with New Yorker that both he and Anna Gunn were “disturbed” by the unwarranted negativity.
Gilligan remarked, “When the show initially aired, Skyler was widely unpopular. That always upset Anna Gunn. It has consistently troubled me as well because Skyler, as a character, did nothing to warrant that disdain. And Anna certainly didn’t deserve it. She portrayed the role magnificently.”
