Los Angeles, Feb 25 (NationPress) Hollywood actress Rachel Zegler has addressed the criticism she encountered regarding Disney's live-action adaptation of Snow White, which is set to hit theaters on March 21.

In an interview with Vogue Mexico, Zegler reflected on her earlier comments about the film and described the audience's negative reactions as a sign of their “passion” for the character and the original 1937 animated film. This adaptation is based on the darker Brothers Grimm fairytale, which dates back to 1812, reports deadline.com.

“I view people’s reactions to this film as their passion for her,” she shared in Spanish, “and it’s such an honor to be involved in something that inspires so much passion. We may not always share the same feelings as others, but our goal is to give our best.”

The timeless story follows Snow White, a princess who is pursued by her envious stepmother, the Evil Queen, who commands her death. Snow White finds sanctuary with seven dwarfs, but the Queen deceives her into consuming a poisoned apple, which puts her into a deep slumber. The spell is lifted by a prince's kiss, allowing Snow White to awaken and live happily ever after.

The tale is rooted in European folklore and has been reinterpreted in various forms, including Disney's iconic 1937 animated classic.

Zegler did not delve deeply into the initial backlash from 2021 that followed her casting as the princess, which was fueled by right-wing animosity towards her Latinx heritage, although she referenced it, drawing parallels to The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey.

“Now I recognize what a wonderful experience it was for all the Black girls around the globe to see Halle portray Ariel in The Little Mermaid,” she remarked.

Bailey encountered severe racism following her casting announcement for another major Disney live-action adaptation of a beloved mermaid character.

A second wave of scrutiny arose after the 2022 D23 Expo prior to filming, during which Zegler described the original 1937 film as “dated,” noting that Prince Charming “literally stalks” the heroine.

Since then, she has revised her perspective, stating in Vogue Mexico: “It’s crucial for the audience to understand that Disney has achieved a beautiful and delicate balance between the cherished 1937 animated classic and its presentation to a new generation.”
