Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 8 (NationPress) The Central Water Commission (CWC), operating under the Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, is set to conduct a one-day workshop aimed at stakeholders focusing on flood forecasting services and the essential guidelines for developing and evaluating detailed project reports related to flood management this coming Monday, as per an official announcement.
The workshop's primary objective is to disseminate the CWC's current services and innovative initiatives among all stakeholders while soliciting their feedback to bolster Centre–State coordination regarding flood forecasting, preparedness, and management planning. Furthermore, the initiative seeks to enhance the effective use of the CWC's forecasting and decision-support services by state governments, aided by various relevant central organizations.
Representatives from flood-prone states will have the chance to present their own initiatives in flood forecasting and explore synergies with the offerings of the CWC.
This workshop is anticipated to significantly improve flood preparedness, enhance the quality of flood management proposals, and fortify institutional coordination, aligning with the government's agenda for disaster resilience and climate-responsive water management.
The morning session will feature technical discussions on the CWC's flood forecasting capabilities, including short-range and seven-day advisory forecasts, inundation predictions, integrated reservoir operation support, GLOF monitoring, and emerging initiatives like AI/ML applications, utilization of extended-range rainfall forecasts from IMD, and flash flood forecasting. Additionally, state governments will share their experiences and initiatives in flood forecasting and collaboration with the CWC.
The afternoon segment will center around the guidelines for drafting, submitting, and evaluating Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for flood management and anti-erosion initiatives, focusing on enhancing project quality and timely evaluations. Input from the states will be instrumental in refining these guidelines.
The workshop will wrap up with a session led by the CWC Chairman, Anupam Prasad, who will summarize the key insights and outline the future course of action.
The workshop will be inaugurated by V.L. Kantha Rao, Secretary of the Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, and will see participation from the CWC Chairman, members, and senior officials from state governments.
