New Delhi, Dec 3 (NationPress) The nation has recorded a staggering 205,287 cases of cybercrime from 2021 to 2023, with 52,974 incidents in 2021, 65,893 in 2022, and 86,420 in 2023, as disclosed by the government in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
This information was provided in a written reply by Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, addressing queries from MP Parimal Nathwani regarding the surge in cyber fraud and cybercrime nationwide.
Notably, the report indicates that the technologically advanced states of Telangana and Karnataka have been particularly vulnerable to cybercriminal activities.
As per the data referenced by the MoS from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Telangana recorded the highest number with 43,836 cases from 2021 to 2023, followed closely by Karnataka with 42,581 cases. Other states affected include Uttar Pradesh with 29,740, Maharashtra with 21,914, and Odisha with 6,368 cases.
The Union Territory of Lakshadweep reported the least, with only three cases, followed by Ladakh with nine, Nagaland with 14, and D&N Haveli and Daman & Diu with 16 cases.
In response to this growing challenge, the Ministry of Home Affairs has established the ‘Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C)’, designed to address all forms of cybercrime in a well-coordinated and comprehensive manner.
Additionally, a state-of-the-art Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC) has been launched at I4C, where representatives from major banks, financial intermediaries, payment aggregators, telecom service providers, IT intermediaries, and law enforcement agencies are collaborating for swift action and effective cooperation against cybercrime.
Significant measures include the creation of the I4C and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, which allows citizens to file complaints online.
The 1930 helpline and the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) have collectively averted financial losses exceeding Rs 7,130 crore.
The government has also implemented national cyber forensic laboratories, initiated a suspect registry for cybercriminal identifiers, blocked over 1.11 million SIMs and 296,000 IMEIs, and launched extensive awareness campaigns regarding digital scams, malware, and online financial traps.
