Hyderabad, Oct 29 (NationPress) The aftermath of the devastating cyclonic storm Montha, which made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast late Tuesday night, has led to significant flooding in various districts of Telangana on Wednesday. This situation has severely disrupted daily life and created chaos in both road and rail transport.
Intense rainfall since early Wednesday has inundated low-lying regions, submerging roads and railway tracks, and resulting in extensive crop damage.
Overflowing streams, lakes, and rivulets have severed road access in numerous locations. The railway lines at Warangal and Dornakal stations were submerged, leading to the cancellation and rerouting of multiple trains.
Districts such as Warangal, Hanamkonda, Mulugu, Mahabubabad, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Nalgonda, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Sircilla, and Nagarkurnool have experienced extraordinarily high rainfall.
Bheemdevarapalle in Hanamkonda district recorded the highest rainfall at 41.9 cm between 8:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, 35 locations reported rainfall exceeding 20.50 cm, while 68 locations recorded more than 11.50 cm.
Kallada in Warangal district saw 36.7 cm of rainfall, followed by 34.3 cm in Urus and 33.9 cm in Redlawada. Dharmasagar in Hanamkonda recorded 33.28 cm of rain.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Jangaon, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Mahabubabad, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Karimnagar, and Sircilla districts and an orange alert for Adilabad, Nirmal, Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagtiyal, Peddapalli, and Bhupalapally.
Post-cyclone, Montha weakened into a deep depression over northern Andhra Pradesh and adjacent areas of southern Odisha, southern Chhattisgarh, and northeastern Telangana. It later downgraded further into a depression over southern Chhattisgarh and neighboring regions.
Authorities in Warangal have announced a holiday for all educational institutions. Due to the flooding of railway tracks at Warangal Railway Station, the Vijayawada Intercity Express and East Coast Express services were halted.
Flooding also affected Dornakal Railway Station in Mahabubabad district, disrupting train services. The South Central Railway had to cancel or reroute several trains.
In Hanamkonda, the local bus station was transformed into a lake, and roads were submerged by overflowing stormwater drains.
A DCM vehicle with its driver was swept away by the floodwaters in Khammam district, being carried off in the Nimmavagu stream near Janaram bridge in Konijarla Mandal.
In Vikarabad district, locals rescued a man swept away in the Kagna river near Veerishettypally in Tandur Mandal.
Nalgonda district's police and rescue teams saved 500 students of a government-run residential school trapped in floodwaters. The tribal welfare boys’ residential school building in Kommapalli village of Devarakonda mandal was inundated, with students calling for help.
In light of the heavy rainfall, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed all administrative bodies to remain vigilant. He directed district officials to evacuate families in low-lying areas to relief camps and alerted the State Irrigation Department to monitor water levels at all projects and reservoirs.
The Chief Minister emphasized that district collectors should be notified before releasing water from overflowing bodies, and sandbags should be prepared at water bodies and reservoirs experiencing heavy inflows.
With heavy rains also affecting Hyderabad, CM Revanth Reddy ordered local civic authorities to deploy disaster management teams for rescue operations in inundated areas across the city.
The SDRF and NDRF teams have been directed to coordinate rescue operations in the rain-affected districts under the supervision of district collectors.
