Darjeeling Hotel Association Declares Indefinite Ban on Bangladeshi Guests

Kolkata, Dec 9 (NationPress) The doors of hotels across the entire Darjeeling district in West Bengal, which includes both plains and hills, will be shut to Bangladeshi visitors for an indefinite period, following a decision made by a hoteliers' association.
A statement released by the Greater Siliguri Hotelier Welfare Association, a copy of which is with IANS, indicates that this resolution was reached through a unanimous vote among the members, showcasing the collective position of the body.
"Effective immediately, member hotels of the association will not allow check-ins for Bangladeshi nationals until further notice. This decision aims to safeguard the safety and well-being of all guests and staff amidst the current sensitive climate," the statement elaborated.
The statement further mentioned that this decision will be regularly reviewed in light of the evolving circumstances, with plans to reinstate accommodations for Bangladeshi visitors when it is considered safe and respectful.
"Moreover, if any directives are issued by the administration regarding this matter, the association and its member hotels will fully comply and adhere to them," the statement continued.
According to the association's secretary, Ujjwal Ghosh, this decision was made despite concerns about potential losses during the tourist season, prioritizing national pride.
"We cannot tolerate the disrespect shown to our national Tricolor in Bangladesh. Insulting remarks about India are being made from there," he expressed.
Another hoteliers' body, the Eastern Himalayan Travel & Tour Operators Association, has also voiced support for this decision.
“National pride is paramount. We are prepared to endure certain losses for that reason. Thus, we are backing the decision to prohibit the check-in of Bangladeshi visitors to hotels in the district for the time being,” stated an office bearer from the association.
This marks the second instance of a hoteliers’ association in West Bengal taking such action, with the first being an association from Malda district.
