Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 31 (NationPress) Renowned former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has predicted that the Delhi Capitals (DC) are poised to secure the championship in the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL), while suggesting that Smriti Mandhana, the captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), could be the top run-scorer in the tournament.
Having been runners-up three times in WPL history, DC is eager to shed their title drought under the leadership of new captain Jemimah Rodrigues. “I genuinely believe that this time, the Delhi Capitals will win. They’ve assembled a fantastic team and have reached the finals on three occasions. It's time to let them win it once,” Chopra stated during a segment on JioStar.
He also highlighted that besides Mandhana, her opening partner Shafali Verma might also contend for the Orange Cap. “I foresee Smriti Mandhana as a strong candidate to garner the most runs this WPL season. She is definitely a frontrunner for the Orange Cap and could triumph. Additionally, Shafali Verma, who will be opening for the Delhi Capitals, is another potential contender,” he added.
Chopra went on to express that both Deepti Sharma and Sree Charani could achieve significant accolades in WPL 2026. “I believe Deepti Sharma is on track to win the Player of the Tournament award for the third consecutive time. Given her current form, she’s unstoppable, and her overall game has significantly improved since her success in the WPL. This could be her season again. I also think that Sree Charani may clinch the Emerging Player of the Season award, especially after her outstanding performance in the World Cup, making her a strong candidate for the tournament's top spinner,” he shared.
Chopra concluded with his prediction regarding the opening match between MI and RCB at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on January 9, stating, “I would favor the Mumbai Indians for this matchup. While there’s little separating the two teams, Mumbai stands out.”
