New Delhi, Dec 10 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra asserts that the potential rise of Jemimah Rodrigues to the captaincy of Delhi Capitals in the forthcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 season will present an exciting narrative. Meg Lanning has been signed by UP Warriorz during last month's mega auction, positioning Jemimah as a strong candidate for DC’s captaincy, particularly following Parth Jindal's declaration that an Indian player will lead the team.

Jemimah previously served as vice-captain when Meg led DC to the WPL finals three times. “With Marizanne Kapp and Annabel Sutherland, DC already possesses eight quality overs. Additionally, we have Nandini Sharma as a viable third bowling option. The spin department is in capable hands with Sneh Rana and Shree Charani, while Chinelle Henry offers robust fast-bowling support,” Chopra mentioned.

“Their overseas players can readily account for ten overs, if not twelve. If Nandini Sharma participates, it further enhances their pace-bowling options. The spin arsenal is already formidable.”

“However, the most captivating element is the way Jemimah Rodrigues leads this team. We have witnessed her evolution as a player and a dynamic team figure, yet this marks her inaugural experience in steering a successful franchise. It's a significant advancement and will be thrilling to observe,” Chopra remarked on JioStar.

Saba Karim, former Indian wicketkeeper-batter and national selector, believes that with the new acquisitions, DC must secure a place in the finals, set for February 5 at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.

“For Delhi Capitals, the auction has never been the problem; it’s about how they conclude the tournament. Despite having key players, they have inexplicably failed to succeed in critical knockout situations. Will they break this pattern this time? They utilized their purse of 5.7 crore wisely,” he noted.

“Chinelle Henry at 1.30 crore is a savvy acquisition. Laura Wolvaardt at the top will provide stability. They have effectively strengthened their spin options with Shree Charani and Sneh Rana, who can also add runs down the order.”

“They are clearly in search of players capable of finishing matches, which is why someone like Sneh Rana at No. 8 or 9 becomes crucial. So, while finishing has been a challenge for DC, they have executed some astute strategies at the auction,” he added.
