New Delhi, July 12 (NationPress) Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva on Saturday applauded the Delhi government for significantly improving the city’s drainage infrastructure and eliminating waterlogging issues in key areas like Minto Bridge. Speaking to the media, he indicated that the recent efforts resulted in no waterlogging beneath the Minto and ITO Bridges in central Delhi, showcasing the effectiveness of the drain de-silting initiatives undertaken by the Rekha Gupta government ahead of the monsoon.
Sachdeva noted that the Gupta government’s emphasis on drainage and sewer cleaning has led to a much quicker drainage of rainwater in several locations this year.
“This year, areas such as Minto Bridge and ITO are in significantly better condition compared to last year,” he added.
The BJP president remarked that from 2008 to 2024, there was a lack of proper attention given to cleaning major drains, sewer lines, and the internal drainage systems of Delhi’s colonies.
He pointed out that between 2008 and 2010, during the period of the Commonwealth Games, the Delhi Jal Board began to falter under the Congress government.
Under Arvind Kejriwal’s rule from 2013 to 2024, both the DJB and the Public Works Department (PWD) gained a reputation for negligence and corruption. “Consequently, from 2010 to 2024, even light rainfall during the monsoon led to severe waterlogging throughout Delhi,” he mentioned.
In 2024, specifically due to the alleged corruption of the Kejriwal government, drains and sewers were not cleaned, leaving many roads and neighborhoods with stagnant water for two to three days during monsoon rains, he said.
Sachdeva expressed concern that due to corruption under the Kejriwal government, both unauthorized colonies and even well-planned areas in Delhi faced severe waterlogging.
He reported that in 2024 alone, over 50 serious and fatal accidents occurred due to waterlogging.
Sachdeva highlighted that in stark contrast, this year, under the Rekha Gupta government, there has been a serious approach to drain and sewer cleaning, which has led to rainwater draining away much more swiftly from roads and streets.
The Delhi BJP President stated that Rekha Gupta’s administration has devised a comprehensive strategy to address waterlogging.
“While this year we are still dealing with some repercussions from the 15-year-long neglect by the Delhi Jal Board, we expect substantial improvements by next year’s monsoon,” he concluded.
