Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 10 (NationPress) In an effort to enhance legislative scrutiny, the Delhi government has officially directed bureaucrats to give precedence to the activities of the recently formed House Committees within the Eighth Legislative Assembly, announced an official from the Assembly Secretariat.
A memo issued by the General Administration Department mandates that all Administrative Secretaries personally attend House Committee meetings and guarantee their departments' complete cooperation through the prompt submission of all required documents and reports, as stated by the official.
To mitigate delays in governance and legislative oversight, the memo specifies that any absence must be substituted by a well-informed senior deputy with prior approval, emphasizing a drive for increased accountability and smooth collaboration between the executive branch and the Delhi Legislature.
The communication, signed by Joint Secretary Pradeep Tayal, indicates that “Committees may, from time to time, require the presence of senior officers of various departments of the GNCT of Delhi for discussions, presentations, or to provide information related to matters under consideration.”
“Thus, all Administrative Secretaries are urged to attend the House Committees’ sessions whenever summoned by the Assembly Secretariat. Should an Administrative Secretary be unable to attend due to unavoidable circumstances, a knowledgeable senior officer should be assigned with prior approval to ensure the smooth progression of proceedings and timely delivery of the necessary information and records,” the memo elaborates.
Additionally, all Administrative Secretaries are encouraged to extend their full cooperation to the Assembly Secretariat by ensuring timely submission of documents, information, reports, or any other materials requested by the House Committees, as reiterated by Tayal.
Recently, linked to the Atishi video controversy, the Committee of Privileges of the Delhi Legislative Assembly instructed the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Government of Punjab, to provide written remarks by February 12, 2026.
Moreover, written responses were requested from the Director General of Police, Punjab, and the Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, regarding the conduct of Punjab Police and their handling of communications and information requested by the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat.
This action follows a complaint filed on February 2 by Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra, accompanied by a note dated February 4 submitted to the Committee.
After reviewing the actions of the Punjab Police, including their responses and the failure to provide documents requested by the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat, the matter has been referred to the Committee of Privileges for further examination and reporting, indicated an official from the Delhi Assembly Secretariat.
