Did the Delhi HC Issue a Notice on Sushil Kumar's Bail Plea in His Murder Case?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 20 (NationPress) The Delhi High Court has recently issued a notice regarding the bail petition submitted by Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar in the murder case concerning junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar from 2021. The court is seeking a detailed status report from the Delhi Police.
A single-judge Bench, led by Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani, has instructed the investigating agency to provide a thorough status report along with the nominal roll of the accused from jail authorities.
This matter is scheduled for further hearing on May 4.
Sushil Kumar is challenging the February 6 ruling from a Rohini court, which denied his second regular bail request.
During the proceedings, Kumar's counsel argued that the Supreme Court had previously canceled his bail based on concerns raised by the deceased's father, specifically regarding the influence on public witnesses who had yet to be examined.
It was contended that since the examination of public witnesses has now been concluded, he should be granted bail.
In opposition, the Additional Public Prosecutor representing the Delhi Police argued that witness examinations are still not complete and requested additional time to submit a detailed status report.
The counsel for the deceased's father also voiced opposition to the wrestler's bail request.
Sushil Kumar, along with others, is alleged to have assaulted Dhankar, a resident of Rohtak, Haryana, and his two friends in the parking area of Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4, 2021, linked to an alleged property dispute.
Dhankar ultimately succumbed to the injuries inflicted during this incident. Earlier, in August 2025, the Supreme Court had annulled the bail previously granted to Kumar by the Delhi High Court, mandating him to surrender within a week and allowing a special leave petition (SLP) filed by Dhankar's father.
Kumar has been in custody since June 2, 2021, except for the periods when he was temporarily released on bail for specific reasons, including performing his father's last rites and undergoing surgery for a torn ligament.
