According to the bail order issued by a bench led by Justice Sanjeev Narula, the wrestler charged with murder must provide a bail bond of Rs 50,000 along with two sureties of the same amount.

Sushil Kumar, along with his co-accused, is alleged to have attacked the former junior national wrestling champion Dhankar, who hailed from Rohtak in Haryana, along with his friends Sonu and Amit Kumar. This incident occurred in the parking lot of Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4, 2021, over a purported property dispute. Kumar has been in judicial custody since June 2, 2021. He was previously granted interim bail to perform the last rites for his father and to undergo surgery for a torn ligament.

Dhankar succumbed to his injuries following the assault, and the post-mortem report indicated that he died due to cerebral damage caused by blunt force.

After evading capture for 18 days following Dhankar's death, Sushil Kumar was apprehended. Reports from Delhi Police indicate that he traveled through Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana during this period. He was ultimately arrested in the Mundka area of Delhi while attempting to retrieve cash and had borrowed a scooty from a national-level athlete. His arrest led to his suspension from his position with the Railways.

In October 2022, the trial court laid down the charges against Sushil Kumar and 17 others, initiating the trial process.

Additional Sessions Judge Shivaji Anand framed charges against Kumar and the co-accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those pertaining to murder, rioting, and criminal conspiracy. The charge sheet submitted by the Delhi Police identifies Sushil Kumar as the mastermind behind the murder conspiracy.
