New Delhi, Aug 9 (NationPress) – The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) revealed that it reached its highest recorded single-day ridership on August 8, 2025, with an astonishing 81,87,674 passenger journeys logged across all active corridors.
This significant achievement occurred just one day prior to the Rakshabandhan festival, a time known for heightened travel demand throughout the National Capital Region.
In a statement shared on X (previously Twitter), DMRC mentioned that it introduced 92 additional train trips on August 8 to manage the surge in passenger numbers. For August 9, the day designated for Rakshabandhan, the organization arranged 455 extra trips to enhance commuter convenience.
“DMRC has recorded its highest-ever passenger journeys on August 8, 2025, totaling 81,87,674 journeys across all lines. To accommodate the Rakshabandhan travel surge, DMRC operated 92 additional trips on the 8th and will continue with 455 extra trips on the 9th for passenger comfort,” the DMRC stated on X.
Despite the DMRC celebrating this milestone, many commuters in Delhi expressed mixed feelings about their metro experiences. Social media platforms were inundated with pictures and videos depicting overcrowded platforms and crammed coaches, especially on busy lines like the Yellow, Blue, and Violet lines.
Numerous passengers described the journey as “extremely crowded” and “discomforting,” with some reporting delays in boarding due to the high influx of travelers. Others acknowledged that while the extra trains were beneficial, the overwhelming number of commuters ahead of the festival made traveling challenging.
Transportation experts emphasize that record ridership days highlight both the Metro’s immense popularity and the necessity for ongoing network expansion and crowd management strategies during peak festival times.
The DMRC currently operates nearly 400 km of railway network across over a dozen lines, catering to Delhi and nearby areas including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Bahadurgarh.
